According to his family, Timothy West, one of the most renowned and versatile performers in Britain, has away at the age of 90.
He was well-known for his on-screen and off-screen performances in soap operas Coronation Street and EastEnders, TV comedy Not Going Out and Bedtime, and dramas like Bleak House and Gentleman Jack.
The actor passed away “in his sleep” and was “with his friends and family at the end,” according to a statement made public by his children.
The actor is also survived by Prunella Scales, star of Fawlty Towers, his wife of 61 years. The couple has been the subject of ten series of Channel 4’s Great Canal Journeys in recent years.
For over two decades, Scales has suffered from vascular dementia.
Dame Joanna Lumley stated: “Obviously, Pru will be devastated by Timothy’s passing, but I believe that everyone who came to love and respect them—not only the general public, but especially those who have dementia—would also be devastated.
“I think between them, Timothy and Pru did an amazing job of convincing people that dementia was not something that you should be always afraid of, but something that you could embrace and live with and live with well,” she told Times Radio.
Broadcaster Piers Morgan paid tribute to West on X, recalling that Scales, the actor’s wife, was in the audience when he interviewed him for his Life Stories series.
